The seventh edition of this classic book of readings combines the best of the previous collections with new material on modern developments, including a mounting debt crisis in Latin America coupled with the failure of neoliberal economics, recent government setbacks versus guerillas in Colombia, and governmental struggles in Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, and Brazil.
Each civilization experienced a time of cultural and intellectual achievement that produced lasting contributions in art, literature, and science. During the time period of the classical civilizations of Greece & Rome, there were advanced societies developing in the Americas. Latin America shares elements of historical experience, language and culture. This group of countries have more in common with each other, in many respects, than they do with Canada and the US. Having said that, Latin America is also a wonderfully diverse group of countries, as well as a growing political and economic force. Latin America is often used synonymously with Ibero-America ("Iberian America"), excluding the predominantly Dutch-, French- and English-speaking territories. Thus the countries of Haiti, Belize, Guyana and Suriname, and several French overseas departments, are excluded. The sixth edition of Latin American Civilization (the third published with a Westview Press imprint) is a compact update of a classic book of readings that teachers and students of Latin American history have used and appreciated since its first appearance in 1955.
